In a recent HBR article, Jack Zenger & Joseph Folkman write about why middle managers are so unhappy.  No one should really be surprised with their Top 5.

5. They don’t feel valued or appreciated.

4.  They feel they are treated unfairly compared with others. 

3. Their work lacks meaning and purpose.

2. They see no career or promotion opportunities.

1. Poor leadership.

It goes without saying that doing something about number 1 would have a big impact on all the others.
